Custom Cowboy Boots for Mexican President Fox

Luis displays his workDuring Vicente Fox’s visit to Fresno in March, Governor Gray Davis presented the Mexican President a pair of custom cowboy boots made by Fresno resident Luis Jovel. Jovel is a master bootmaker in the 2000-2001 California Folk and Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program administered by ACTA at the Fresno Arts Council.

A fourth generation shoemaker from El Salvador, Jovel made the boots in record time after the governor’s office called him with Fox’s foot measurements only a few days before his expected visit to California.

The dark leather boots have custom-designed emblems on the upper parts depicting the map of California and the bear on one and the serpent, eagle, and cactus of the Mexican flag on the other. Cutting and stitching the intricate patterns in the inlay process requires great skill.

Jovel’s shop, Luis’ Custom Shoes & Cowboy Boot Maker, is located on East Shields Avenue in Fresno.
